Wyoming snowpack declines to 59 percent of average

CHEYENNE — Wyoming's snowpack continues to decline.

The U.S. Agriculture Department's Natural Resources Conservation Service reports that snowpack is 59 percent of average this week. That's down from 63 percent last week and 119 percent last year at this time.

The Belle Fourche basin doesn't have any snow left at all. The Madison basin has the most snow at 96 percent of average.

Record mountain snowmelt caused disastrous flooding across Wyoming last year but this year federal hydrologists foresee below average runoff because of the lower snowfall.

This story appeared in the Casper Star Tribune this AM. A stark difference from the past couple years. Wade fishing is excellent and recruitment will likely suffer as a result of redds being too available to anglers and predators. There is a lot of water being held in the reservoirs above us and this is not a "sky is falling" situation. Really looking forward to a little less water this year, although if it were high I would be looking forward to that...all good in their own way.

This story appeared in the Casper Journal and mentions our local snow pack...which is huge for us. We seemed to attract every storm so far. This water won't mean a whole lot for Grey Reef as it enters no further upstream than near Cole Mountain Road with the majority entering in Casper or below. But this may affect the need for water to be called downstream. Who knows? It has made for a great ski year in Casper, none the less.
